What are heater bands? Expand Collapse
Heater bands are industrial electric heating elements designed to wrap around cylindrical surfaces, such as barrels, pipes, or tanks, to provide controlled heat. They are commonly used in plastic processing, chemical manufacturing, and other applications requiring consistent surface heating.
How do heater bands work? Expand Collapse
Heater bands use a resistive heating element encased in a metal sheath, usually stainless steel, that tightly fits around the cylinder. Electrical power flows through the element, producing heat which transfers directly to the surface of the barrel or tank. This ensures uniform heating along the entire circumference.
Heater bands typically use stainless steel or Incoloy sheaths for durability and corrosion resistance. Inside, magnesium oxide (MgO) insulation surrounds the resistive wire, providing excellent thermal conductivity and electrical insulation.
Heater bands are used in numerous industries, including:
  • Plastics industry: Barrel heating for extrusion and injection moulding.
  • Chemical processing: Maintaining fluid temperature in tanks and pipes.
  • Food and beverage: Heating vats or cylindrical containers for production processes.
  • Laboratories and R&D: Small-scale precision heating for experiments or prototypes.
When selecting a heater band, consider the cylinder diameter, required operating temperature, power supply, watt density, and environmental conditions. Ensuring a snug fit and proper wattage distribution is critical for consistent heating and long service life
Heater bands provide fast and uniform heating, energy efficiency, durability in industrial environments, and flexibility for custom applications. They are particularly effective for heating barrels, tanks, and pipes where precise surface temperature control is needed.
